Schematic of gist experiment. Participants saw a brief (500 ms) flash of a histology image which was then masked. They made a normal/abnormal judgment and then reported how they made this judgment. If they had selected an abnormal judgment, after reporting how they made that judgment, they were then presented with the 4 histopathology categories and selected one of them. They then reported how they made this category decision
