Design and Stimuli. A In the first experiment (global impression), radiologists and medical students were presented with thorax X-rays with lesions (abnormal) and without lesions (normal) in an upright and inverted orientation for 200 ms or 500 ms. Before the actual presentation of X-rays, a screen lasting for 1000 ms was presented, preparing the participants for the upcoming stimulus. After the X-ray had disappeared, another screen was presented where the participants had to indicate their response. B In the second experiment (nodule recognition), radiologists and medical students were presented with thorax X-rays in an upright and inverted orientation for 200 ms or 500 ms. Before the actual presentation of X-rays, a preparation screen with the cue where the supposed nodule would appear was shown for 1000 ms. After the X-ray had disappeared, another screen was presented where the participants had to decide whether the tissue presented contained a nodule
