Procedure for the task in Experiment 1a. Participants first view a string of consonants, then a stimulus presented briefly, followed by a blank screen, and a second stimulus that may be either the same as or different from the first. After seeing the second stimulus, participants are to indicate whether the first and second stimuli are the same or different. On some trials, participants are also prompted to type in the consonant string presented at the beginning of the trial
