Paths for the training tasks. Participants in the training condition practiced allocentric spatial updating on three paths in each session (paths a–f assigned to sessions 1–6). Triangle paths are shown in the left column, quadrilateral paths in the middle column, and crossing paths in the right column. Participants walked the paths from the start to the end, blindfolded and guided by the experimenter, and were asked to go directly back to the starting point by themselves, still blindfolded. When they indicated that they reached the starting point, they were asked to point in the direction of north. The gray dots, used for scaling, are placed 1.5 m apart. S = start; E = end
