Four navigation system interface designs with varying navigation system behavior in terms of a combination of two cognitive processes (CP): allocation of attention (Alloc; green) and self-localization (Loc; blue). Each cognitive process involves either higher active participation from the human side (low level of automation; Hum) or higher system assistance (high level of automation; Sys). The figure illustrates for each navigation system design how the implemented processes map to the levels of automation of Parasuraman et al. (2000) (Fig. 1).
