Simulated receiver operating characteristic curves for sequential and simultaneous (Sim) six-person lineups assuming true d′ = 1.5. An absolute decision rule was used for the simultaneous lineup: The strongest above-criterion item was selected. Two versions of the sequential task were simulated, one in which the first tested item to exceed criterion was identified, at which point the trial ended (Seq, 1st ID), and the other in which the trial continued after an initial identification; subsequent identifications of stronger items were allowed (Seq, any)
